Use postcards as references.

 

If you’re not sure how to photograph a particular building, monument or sight, visit the nearest postcard rack and see what that photographer did! If you like the shot on a postcard, try and take yours from a similar vantage point. It may not always work, but it will give you some ideas. If it’s an ancient monument or building, find a postcard reproduction of an old etching or painting and take your photo from a similar angle – then compare the ‘before’ and ‘after’ when you get home.
